Most acupuncturists have little understanding of the complicated dynamics to addiction though often find themselves treating individuals who are dependent upon drugs and alcohol. In this seminar you will learn how to recognize the face of addiction with its defining behaviors. DSM diagnostic criteria for the recognition of addiction will be presented. Different categories of psychoactive substances including but not limited to Opiates, cocaine, methamphetamine, alcohol, benzodiazepines and hallucinogens will be discussed along with the signs and symptoms of withdrawal including pattern discrimination. Addiction affects people physically, psychologically and socially. This seminar will teach acupuncturists the biopsychosocial aspects to chemical addiction. Both western and eastern theories of addiction will be presented along with a demonstration and practice session for the use of auricular acupuncture. Treatment approaches will be taught along with the 12-steps which almost every facility incorporates into their program. Meditations for the recovering population will be presented.
